When Cookies Bite Back
Three things happen when an AI agent hits your pop-up. None of them are good.

This will sound familiar: a friend sends you an article you are genuinely excited to read. You click the link and instead of reading the content, you have to manage the settings of the website's cookie policy. It is an irritating start for every visitor.
What you probably have not thought about is what happens when someone sends an AI agent to get information on your site. If you have a pop-up on your website asking visitors to manage cookies, you probably never thought about what an AI agent does at that point.
What actually happens? There are three likely scenarios.
1. The agent rejects all cookies.
It will only see a stripped-down version of your site, not the full experience you designed for real customers. Whatever it reports back to the person who sent it is incomplete.
2. The agent gets stuck.
An agent that hits a pop-up it cannot navigate will just leave. The session ends. Your site never gets evaluated. The person who sent the agent gets nothing. Or worse, the agent gives the person answers it got from your competitor.
3. The agent accepts all cookies.
Legally speaking, no human actually consented to be tracked. Under GDPR, that is problematic.
None of those are good outcomes. And you probably did not set up your cookie banner with any of this in mind.
Then there is the coupon pop-up.
You know the one. "Save 20% today!" The moment someone lands on your homepage, before they have even seen what you sell, before they have any idea if they want it, you are asking for their email address.
A human visitor closes it immediately and automatically without even reading it, and keeps browsing. But an AI agent does not work that way. And even if it could dismiss it, the offer makes no sense at that stage. The agent has not seen your product yet. It is not going to go back and tell the human there is a discount. Best case it ignores the coupon. Worst case it confuses the coupon for the whole site and gives up.
These barriers are not just annoying. They are actively getting in the way of AI systems trying to understand and recommend your business.
